How to survive on a diabetic diet in DV Soria - CDO
When I got pregnant, my blood sugar went heaps and heaps crazy than the usual. I won't give you the stats but it was JUST crazy. So crazy that my MDs put me on insulin to ensure my safety and my baby's. The thought of poking needles into my own flesh throughout my pregnancy made being scared stiff crazy in a horror house a speck of a sand in an ocean of diamonds. And it was not even about the needles and stuff, the whole thing was about how to keep your retarded hormones at bay when pregnancy in itself is diabetical. To keep them all normal, insulin was just one, stress management is another, and the biggest chunk of the challenge is FOOD.
Since I work for the Jesuits, my job often times bring me to DV Soria. With a very delicate pregnancy to note for the whole nine months, every bit of food that got into my mouth was calculated and well-thought-out.
How did I survive DV Soria? The first intelligent move was to delete the following from the list:
1. Jollibee
2. Greenwich
3. Red Ribbon
4. Mc Donalds
5. Dunkin donuts
There is absolutely nothing EDIBLE from those fast foods / chains. They all sell highly processed foods which are totally bad not just for diabetics but for EVERYONE.
So let me just begin with the breakfast. Actually, this is difficult. Breakfast should be the healthiest, heaviest meal of the day. My breakfast defines the quality of my day. I get cranky if it is not a complete meal. Since Jollibee and McDo should not be in the list (their breakfast food is the WORST), sorry to say that you'd have to have it at home. Complete healthy breakfast means a cup of rice OR a couple of sliced bread; a portion of protein (boiled egg OR steamed fish, not both!), a serve of vegetables, a slice of fresh fruit and a tall glass of non-fat milk. This combination of balanced meal assures stability of blood sugar and energy for the whole day. It wonderfully erases migraines, too!
Admittedly, I run out of stuff in the pantry to make a complete breakfast every once in a while. To be a bit forgiving, you can always hit Jollibee and ask for an SO (special order). Plain rice instead of fried; just water instead of hot choco. Just have a portion of longganisa instead of double. At best, you can have Jollispaghetti without cheese and please don't eat the hotdog chunks that come with it. When you leave Jollibee, you can always buy fresh fruit from the stands and buy a small pack of milk from the convenience store along Dunkin. That will do for breakfast and I promise you won't go gaga craving for snacks.
Lunch would be so much easier to manage. Here are the better places for you to hit healthy lunch:
1. Barkadahan Grill for their grilled malasugui or blue marlin . They also have a solo-
sabaw; e.g. fish tinola or sinigang; again, do not forget to order veggies and fruits. There is also a
bonus in this area, there is a sugar-free ice cream at La Favorita;just outside Barkadahan. Go have
a cone!
2. Mandarin Tea Garden for their steamed fish, mixed vegetables and tropical fruit (always request
to separate cream from the fruit slices).
3. Penong's for their grilled bangus. You can also order the veggies that fancies you for the moment.
Dinner is the most exciting meal of the day. It has to be special. It is your treat to yourself for "taking care" of yourself the whole day. Here is the best deal for dinner:
1. Mom's Corner for their Chef Salad. It is a plateful of iceberg lettuce with cucumber, croutons,
sliced egg, bacon and cheese. It is heavy enough you'd have difficulty standing up from your chair.
Haha. You may also get veggy rice if you feel like it; it is plain rice topped with a variety of
vegetables and poached egg. Or, have this mountain of greens with their Chicken Fetuccinni (sic).
Lami ra pud.
2. Tita Frannies for their Sinigang na Malasugi! My gosh! It just tastes so fresh and natural. There
is not a trace of added flavoring. It does not come with rice so you may order a few cups for
your friends but just make sure you'd only have one serve! For your fruits, I suggest that you hit
this lovely fruit shop a few meters away from Tita Frannies and enjoy.
With this tailored food ensemble to fit your need, you can go check your FBS the next day and smile! :)
